Heartland Alliance Introduces the Fair Lending Act

On Tuesday, February 13th, Heartland Alliance was proud to stand with Representative Christian Mitchell, Senator Kimberly Lightford, and passionate consumer protection organizations at the Illinois State Capitol. There, we announced the introduction of the Fair Lending Act.

In an effort to protect consumers from extreme auto title lending practices and triple-digit interest rates, the Fair Lending Act will cap car title loan interest rates at 36 percent, providing a long overdue safe guard for the people of Illinois.

Without the Fair Lending Act, Illinois law does little to protect consumers from abusive car title lending, as title loans are excluded from the laws that provide protections for payday loans and other small loans. This legislation is a big step forward in providing safe and affordable lending opportunities that help families get ahead.

Support the Fair Lending Act today by viewing our fact sheet and adding your organizations name to our sign on letter.

smallcoinsThe Budget Address: A Plan to Cut Human Services in Illinois

Governor Rauner gave his fourth Budget Address on February 14, once again outlining significant cuts to human service programs and Medicaid. This is particularly disappointing considering the long-lasting damage to Illinois's human service sector wrought by the two-year budget impasse. Heartland Alliance will oppose these cuts and continue to support the campaign for a Fair Tax Now to implement the progressive income tax structure necessary to properly fund the vital health and human service programs Illinoisans need to thrive.
